Happy Holidays!

This season gives us the chance to reflect on the holidays past and look forward to a future of adding to that treasure chest of happy memories.

The joy of brightening lives, bearing burdens, easing loads, and filling hearts and lives with gifts is all part of the magic.  A child’s laugh, a special family dish, the sights and smells of celebrations combine to renew our faith that makes all things possible.

Many times, our community has been tested, and we have always come through it stronger than ever.  It’s a bond and understanding that we share, a promise to help when help is needed, to jump in without being asked, without any promise of a return in kind.  It’s a special time in a special place that lives in this spirit all year long.

May love and light fill your heart throughout this Holiday and into the New Year.

Priorities change from year to year, but the fundamentals remain the same. Crises like the Maui wildfires, epidemics, hurricanes—make us take a look in the mirror. Are we doing what we need to do, are we doing all we can? Are we caring for our Maui ‘ohana who are in immediate distress but also keeping our kuleana and meeting the continuing needs of our community at home?

When families must decide between a place to live, food, clothing or medical care, the cost of living is too high. Housing, especially affordable housing for our local families must be a top priority not just this year but every year to make the difference that’s needed. This session, funds were allocated for up to 114 units for Kapa`a Public Housing and we are working toward making universal pre-school available for all keiki and expanding educational opportunities for those who want to go to trade school rather than college.

Priorities may change, but basic needs do not. We will continue to fund our infrastructure of roads, bridges, public health and education, our environment, culture and food production systems to make investments in our future and in our economy. We must attack the cost of living from every possible angle while offering opportunities to succeed and thrive, to raise our families in healthy, resilient, and supportive communities on our island home.
